README
This database captures the BooksRun textbook catalog, including its category hierarchy, book metadata, author slugs, pricing and publication details, and associated book images. Records include crawl timestamps and internal identifiers, allowing catalog content and related assets to be traced over time.
Catalog organization
The category hierarchy is represented by category and subcategory. Categories contain names such as Accounting and their corresponding catalog slugs, while subcategories add a more specific label such as Financial and retain the parent category. The category_1 table contains a parallel category dataset with totals and processing-status fields; its sample URLs use the /sell/college-textbooks/ path, whereas the newer category and subcategory records use /college-textbooks/.
The _total and _total_worked values in category_1 and subcategory appear to support collection or processing progress. They should be treated as operational metadata rather than textbook attributes.
Books
The book table is the primary source for textbook records. Each book has a title and BooksRun slug, along with identifying information such as ISBN-10, ISBN-13, author, edition, publication year, publisher, format, and page count. The sample includes a hardcover finance textbook published by Foundation Press in 2014.
Book records also contain descriptive and commercial information:
descriptionandsummaryprovide editorial and catalog text.categorystores one or more category names in a comma-separated value.price,rent_price, and marketplace-related fields capture buyback, rental, Amazon, ebook, used, and new pricing where available.starstores the rating value when present._img_slugpoints to a BooksRun image-loader URL.
Many commercial fields are empty in the sample, so an empty value should be interpreted as unavailable or not captured rather than as zero. Prices are stored as strings and may include currency labels or phrases such as from $209.99; applications should normalize them before numerical analysis.
Authors and images
The author table provides author names and author-specific slugs. The sample contains a combined author name, Stamps/Baxter, indicating that the value may represent multiple contributors or a publisher-style attribution rather than a single normalized person.
The book_image table stores image provenance and file metadata, including the original or transformed source URL, content type, content hash, file size, storage path, and title. Its book_id associates an image with a record in book. The hash-based path and hash_file_content can be used to identify or deduplicate downloaded assets. A blank image title is possible, as shown in the sample.
Identifiers, timestamps, and slugs
Rows expose an id and a ts timestamp in addition to their catalog attributes. The timestamps differ substantially across tables—for example, category records are dated in October 2022 while the sample book record is from January 2018—so they likely reflect collection or ingestion times rather than publication dates.
_yf_slug values are relative BooksRun paths and distinguish resource types such as category pages, author pages, and textbook detail pages. They are useful for reconstructing catalog URLs, but the path conventions differ between datasets. Book ISBNs are the preferred identifiers for matching editions when available; titles and slugs may vary across crawls or records.
